Exploring new Linux proxy roles

When it comes to using a Linux server as a proxy server, you can make this a physical server, or it can also be a VM. Access to a network where all servers can be backed up, along with access to storage, is beneficial no matter what you choose.

The evolution of the Linux proxy started in Veeam Backup and Replication v10, where you could use it as a standard proxy server using HotAdd mode for backups. Then, in Veeam Backup and Replication v11, additional modes were added:

  • NBD: Network backup mode
  • Direct SAN: Direct storage backup
  • HotAdd: Attaches disks of the servers to the proxy for reading
  • Backup from storage snapshots (iSCSI and FC): Backups directly from your storage array based on your storage type

Along with the backup modes introduced in v11, the quick rollback (CBT restore) options allow you to restore a server using the latest backup and only restore the changed blocks. This feature is the quickest method for restoring...
