Time for action—adding elements and variation to our beat pattern

Let's add additional content to our pattern. Adding variation will help keep things from getting repetitive or gasp boring:

  1. Hit your Space bar to temporarily suspend playback of the editor.
  2. Go to the Side Bar and drag over hihat_closed01.
  3. In the new step sequencer, let's put that hi-hat on these beats:
    Time for action—adding elements and variation to our beat pattern
  4. Now hit the Space bar again.
  5. This pattern works well, but maybe we want a little more variation in the hi-hat. We can add steps to our step sequencer by right-clicking in the step area and choosing to add more steps. The more variation and the longer the sequence, the less repetitive our project will sound.
  6. When we right-click on the pattern, we get the following menu:
    Time for action—adding elements and variation to our beat pattern
  7. In this menu, let's head down to Add steps. Choose Add 16 steps. Do this for all of the patterns.
  8. Now our sequencer should change to reflect the new extended hi-hat pattern! Drag the window out to make the steps easier to see.
