Building ERP Solutions with Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Chapter 2. Configuring Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web Services

Starting from version 2009, Microsoft Dynamics NAV supports the creating and publishing Microsoft Dynamics NAV objects and functionalities as web services.

Web services permit an easy, open, and flexible way to integrate NAV with the external systems and applications.

In this chapter, we'll learn about the following topics:

  • Types of web service you can have in NAV
  • Activating NAV web services
  • Publishing NAV objects as web services

Microsoft Dynamics NAV web service protocols

From NAV objects, you can publish two types of web service:

  • SOAP web services
  • OData web services

Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is an XML-based, platform-independent, and language-independent messaging protocol for exchanging information via the Internet. SOAP enables client applications to easily connect to remote services and invoke remote methods.

The most common type of messaging pattern in SOAP is the Remote Procedure Call (RPC), where one network node (the client) sends a request message to another node (the server), and the server sends a response message back to the client.

Open Data Protocol (OData) is a web protocol that is designed for querying tabular data. The protocol enables the creation and consumption of Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs using normal HTTP messages.

The OData standard is good for web service applications that require a uniform, flexible, general purpose interface for exposing Create,...

Microsoft Dynamics NAV web service types

The NAV objects that can be exposed as web services are:

  • Page web services
  • Codeunit web services
  • Query web services

To use NAV web services, a client must be properly authenticated on NAV. After a successful authentication, it can read and write data using SOAP over the HTTP protocol.

Page web services

A NAV page published as a web service permits you to have CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) on the entity linked to the Page object.

When you expose a page as an OData web service, you can query that data to return a service metadata Entity Data Model Extension (EDMX) document, an AtomPub document, or a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) document. If the exposed page has write permissions, you can also insert data on NAV.

In a page web service, each operation is executed on a single transaction with optimistic concurrency. These are the functions exposed on a page web service by default:

Publishing NAV web services

Web services can be set up in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Windows client (RoleTailored Client) or in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web client. You must then publish the web service in order to have it available to the client applications.

Users can discover web services by pointing a browser at the computer that is running the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server and requesting a list of available services.

When you publish a web service, it is immediately available over the network for authenticated users (only users with the correct NAV permissions can access and use published web services).

Creating and publishing NAV web services

To create and then publish a NAV object as a web service, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Windows client or the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web client and, in the Search box, enter web services as the keyword and choose the related link:

Creating and publishing NAV web services

  2. In the Web Services page, click on New:

Creating and publishing NAV web services

  3. Insert a new record in the table:
    • Object Type: Choose...

Summary

In this chapter, we have seen what types of web services you have with Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and what types of protocols they use and we analyzed the differences between them. We have seen how to set up and activate web services in NAV by configuring the service tier and by publishing them from the Windows client, and then how to test whether all is working by using the browser.

After this chapter, you should have a complete knowledge of how to publish NAV business logic to the external applications.

In the next chapter, we'll see how to create an application that will use published NAV web services.

Key benefits

  • Integrate NAV with various offerings of the Microsoft stack to create enterprise-ready and service-oriented solutions
  • Use Power BI and Universal Windows Platform for effective data analysis and real-time tracking with NAV
  • Discover the services offered by Microsoft Azure and implement them in different industries using real-world case scenarios

Description

Implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV in the real world often requires you to integrate the ERP with external applications or solve complex architectural tasks in order to have a final successful project. This book will show you how to extend a Microsoft Dynamics NAV installation to the enterprise world in a practical way. The book starts with an introduction to Microsoft Dynamics NAV architecture and then moves on to advanced topics related to implementing real-world solutions based on NAV and external applications. You will learn how an enterprise distributed architecture with NAV at the core can be implemented. Through a series of real-world cases on every topic and every industry (sales, retail, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and so on), you’ll see step by step how to efficiently solve a technical problem. These common problems encountered in a NAV implementation will be solved using the entire technology stack that Microsoft offers. By the end of the book, you will have the knowledge to efficiently solve certain scenarios, you will know which is the best solution architecture to propose to a customer and how to implement it.

Who is this book for?

This book is for NAV developers and solution architects who need to implement real-world enterprise solutions based on Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Knowledge of the NAV programming language (C/AL) and C# language is recommended. Knowledge of ASP.NET and Visual Studio development would help, but is not necessary.

What you will learn

  • Configure NAV Web Services and create external applications with Visual Studio, .NET, and .NET Core
  • Solve technical architectural problems by implementing enterprise solutions with NAV
  • Develop applications and solutions with Microsoft Dynamics NAV and the Microsoft technology stack
  • Create a Power BI dashboard for rich reporting and NAV data analysis
  • Find out how to transmit your device location from a UWP application to NAV in order to implement a distributed solution for managing couriers in a sales company
  • Make the most of Microsoft Azure and its services
  • Create enterprise solutions with NAV by using Azure App Service
  • Use Azure Service Bus for managing distributed NAV applications

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
