2. How we create AIs
Throughout the book, we’ll refer to different levels of AIs and different types of AIs. Levels tell us how intelligent they are, whereas types tell us what they do.
On the types front, we’ve got things like computer vision AIs powering everything from facial recognition systems and line calling in professional tennis to the clever stuff in self-driving cars. We’ve also got machine learning AIs powering email spam filters and the recommendations you get from Alexa, Amazon, Netflix, and Spotify through to medical research AIs. And we’ve got generative AIs, like ChatGPT, creating text, music, images, and more. There are more types of AI, but that’s enough for us.
The point is, no matter what type of AI, they all fall into one of the following three levels based on how intelligent they are:
- Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI)
- Artificial general intelligence (AGI)
- Artificial superintelligence (ASI)
