Computing Foundations – Databases

This chapter will introduce you to databases and the Structured Query Language (SQL). It is mainly for healthcare professionals and beginner data scientists and programmers who are interested in working with healthcare databases. By the end of the chapter, you will know what a database is and how to use basic SQL to extract and manipulate information in clinical databases. We will present an example task and SQL statements useful for manipulating data in a sample mini-database of five patients.
