Report components – overview

What we generally refer to as the report or report object that’s created with SQL Report Builder or Visual Studio Report Designer is technically referred to as an RDLC report. (From here on out, we will focus on the SQL Report Builder tool. The tools are somewhat different, but the end results are basically the same.) An RDLC report includes information that describes the logic to be followed when processing the data (the data model), the dataset structure that is generated by Visual Studio Code, and the output layout that’s designed with SQL Report Builder. RDLC reports are stored in the Business Central database. Word report XML layouts and Excel XLSX layout files are also stored in the Business Central database. Business Central allows there to be multiple formats for a single report. We will use the term “report” when we are referring to the output, the description, or the object.
