Supporting the Developers
The Scrum Master role is primarily one of leadership. The Scrum Guide states that the Scrum Master is a true leader who serves the Scrum Team and the larger organization. The Scrum Master serves the Scrum Team in the following way:
- Coaching team members on Scrum processes and practices
- Protecting the Scrum Team from unnecessary distractions or interference
- Removing obstacles that impede progress
- Ensuring that all Scrum Events happen on time, stay within their timebox, and are conducted in a productive manner according to the Scrum Values
Leadership is not about telling people what to do; it’s about creating an environment where people are intrinsically motivated to work together to achieve a common goal. To do that, the Scrum Master must be aware of what affects the Scrum Team and must possess an array of skills, as well as the knowledge of when and how to apply them.
