Customizing the header and footer

When working with a table of contents in Microsoft Word and if folks decide they want to customize something such as page numbers, navigating to the header and footer area is the last place most people will think to look. So, naturally, many get confused here. Working with Word's automatic table of contents feature is not the most intuitive feature or process if you are not accustomed to working with Microsoft Word documents and features.

If you have used one of Microsoft Word's automatic table of contents (like I have), content such as the names of chapters and the page numbers will be pulled from your document headings (see Chapter 8, Saving Time and Ensuring Consistency with Styles) and automatically be updated when you click the Update Table button:
