Introduction to Amazon EC2 security
Security plays an important role in the operation of organization assets in the cloud. Security in the cloud, including Amazon EC2, is not just critical but a foundational one. Although the cloud offers flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency, it also presents a unique array of security considerations. Specifically, a service such as EC2 is susceptible to an extensive range of potential threats. A lapse in security measures can lead to catastrophic outcomes, as we have seen with incidents such as the Capital One breach (https://www.capitalone.com/digital/facts2019/), where a security exploit led to over 100 million customer records being accessed.
Ultimately, cloud security is a shared responsibility where Amazon embeds security into the core services to ensure the security of the cloud, while the customer is responsible for the security in the cloud. We’ll discuss this shared responsibility in the next section.
