In addition to helping students feel connected and gauging the level of comprehension, engagement, and interest, the choice activity can be used to create questionnaires and psychological inventories. While you may not want to go into depth with something such as a Meyers-Briggs inventory, you may wish to help students identify certain characteristics or preferences, which could include learning styles.
So, you can use the choice activity to construct inventories that help students gain insight and understanding into their own processes. With new knowledge and insight, they may have more success in an online course as they adapt their study habits to accommodate their learning styles.
After the students have indicated their learning preferences, you can code the course materials so that they correspond to the options in The Way I Prefer to Learn.
