Understanding IT service management
Information technology service management (ITSM) covers IT operations and tasks as services delivered to an organization that benefits from them. This is an interesting approach to standardizing how systems administration is accomplished by distinct enterprises from diverse industries. SREs must be able to do IT management independently of an implemented ITSM framework. We will look at the most adopted framework and a variation of the ITSM model in the next two sections:
- Information Technology Infrastructure Library
- DevOps
Let’s delve into the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework next.
ITIL
The main goal of ITIL is to align IT services, provided by IT systems, with business needs. It does that by prescribing detailed practices for IT activities. ITIL version 4 was released in February 2019 to align its practices with modern work philosophies, such as Agile, DevOps, and Lean.
