Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions ??? Exam Guide 70-535

Configuring Compute-Intensive Applications

In the previous chapter, we covered the Azure Virtual Machine (VM) objective. We covered how to design Azure VMs by discussing the available series and sizes. We also covered how to design for high availability and performance using the various features Azure provides.

This chapter introduces the compute-intensive applications objective. It will cover how to design high-performance computing (HPC) and other compute-intensive applications using Azure services, how to determine when to use Azure Batch, and how to design stateless components to accommodate scale and containers with Azure Batch.

The following topics will be covered:

  • High-performance compute virtual machines
  • Microsoft HPC Pack
  • Azure Batch

High-performance compute virtual machines

Azure offers several virtual machine series and sizes that are designed and optimized for compute-intensive tasks. They are also known as compute-intensive instances. At the time of writing this book, Azure offers the A8-A11, the N-series, and the H-series, which all support HPC workloads.

These series and sizes consist of hardware that is designed and optimized for compute-intensive, graphics-intensive, and network-intensive applications. They are best suited for modeling, simulations, and HPC cluster applications:

  • The A-series offers RDMA networking, which provides ultra-low-latency and high bandwidth networking.
  • The N-series is aimed at graphics-intensive and compute-intensive applications. They consist of different NVIDIA Tesla GPUs that are well suited for deep learning applications, gaming applications, or virtualization.
  • The...

Microsoft HPC Pack

Microsoft provides an HPC Pack for Windows Server 2012, 2016, and Linux machines. This is a free offering and you can use this to create HPC clusters on your on-premises servers and Azure VMs.

You can install HPC Pack on a Windows or Linux Server. These machines will automatically become the head node of the cluster. You can then add additional nodes to the cluster and run a job on it. This job will be distributed across all the available nodes automatically.

It offers the following additional features:

  • Hybrid Cluster: You can set up hybrid clusters using on-premises servers and Azure VMs
  • HPC Cluster Manager: A tool for managing, deploying, and configuring HPC clusters
  • PowerShell: You can use HPC PowerShell to manage, configure, deploy, add, and execute jobs on the cluster

You can use HPC Pack for designing effective cloud-native HPC solutions and hybrid...

Azure Batch

Azure Batch is a service that helps developers scale their workloads over virtual machines (Windows or Linux) or containers, without the need to manage the infrastructure. With Azure Batch, you can run large-scale, parallel and HPC applications efficiently in the cloud. Batch computing is most commonly used for applications that regularly process, transform, or analyze large volumes of data. Typically, HPC applications that run on Azure Batch include deep learning applications, image rendering applications, media encoding applications, and Monte Carlo simulations. Azure Media Services uses Azure Batch internally for media encoding as well.

The Azure Batch service uses Azure compute as its infrastructure, which means you can use both Windows or Linux VMs to host your applications or workloads. Azure uses the A8/A9 series VMs with RDMA networking internally for the nodes...

Summary

In this chapter, we have covered the compute-intensive applications objective. We've covered how to design HPC and other compute-intensive applications using Azure services, how to determine when to use Azure Batch, and how to design stateless components to accommodate scale and Containers on Azure Batch.

In the next chapter, we will cover the web application objective.

Description

Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions: Exam Guide 70-535 will get Azure architects and developers up-to-date with the latest updates on Azure from an architecture and design perspective. The book includes all the topics that are still relevant from the previous 70-534 exam, and is updated with latest topics covered, including Artificial Intelligence, IoT, and architecture styles. This exam guide is divided into six parts, where the first part will give you a good understanding of how to design a compute infrastructure. It also dives into designing networking and data implementations. You will learn about designing solutions for Platform Service and operations. Next, you will be able to secure your resources and data, as well as design a mechanism for governance and policies. You will also understand the objective of designing solutions for Platform Services, by covering Artificial Intelligence, IoT, media services, and messaging solution concepts. Finally, you will cover the designing for operations objective. This objective covers application and platform monitoring, as well as designing alerting strategies and operations automation strategies. By the end of the book, you’ll have met all of the exam objectives, and will have all the information you need to ace the 70-535 exam. You will also have become an expert in designing solutions on Microsoft Azure.

Who is this book for?

This book is for architects and experienced developers, who are gearing up for the 70-535 exam. Technical architects interested in learning more about designing Cloud solutions will also find this book useful.

What you will learn

  • •Use Azure Virtual Machines to design effective VM deployments

The exam guide is well written and contains the information to prepare for the exam including the links to further readings. In a hard copy version of the book, the links are a challenge - there are quite a few of them. Most of the services in Azure are described in the book, and it provides an excellent introduction. The author can write about each service in depth - hence also the links for further readings. The mock questions at the end are an excellent primer for preparing for the exam.

Studying for Microsoft exams has become harder over the years. Microsoft used to publish detailed training guides taking you through everything in detail, and the long release cycles made sure things were fairly static for a long time.In the cloud world however things move at a different pace, and the targets are constantly moving. This is a fact we cannot escape when studying for certifications, but we still need something to guide us along the way.Microsoft outlines all the bullet points for any given exam on their site, but these lists are fairly unhelpful for actual studying unless you go searching for a bunch of articles on the MS documentation sites. And for something like an architecture exam which is "vague" by nature it can be even harder since there aren't always step-by-step solutions to questions. The author of this book takes care of many of these challenges for you. With this book you get a long-read that isn't just an expanded link collection based on the exam objectives. It reads like a proper book where there is a narrative throughout. The chapters build on each other, but can still be read stand-alone if you prefer to do things in a different order. There are comparisons between the different solutions/options. The book focuses on the high level things which are relevant to architecture instead of diving into all the low level details, and it's up to date. (Well, at least at the time I read through it.) It also demonstrates that the author has actual experience with Azure, and hasn't just done an academical write up based on the bullet points from Microsoft.I would say this is a good purchase to help you on your way to certification. Like most books it can't replace actual working with the subject so you would still need to do that, but it's always helpful to have something like this in addition. I even wanted to get my hands dirty coding new things after reading through sections of material I wasn't all that familiar with beforehand!Pros:- Easy to understand language and clear instructions.- Plenty of links to reference material.- Mock test.- Code samples. Sure, architecture shouldn't focus on code, but I like the occasional sample to get the demo experience. So, as you might be able to guess I think it is a good book, but of course one still has to ask - is everything perfect with this book? Unfortunately there are a few minor things I must comment on.- The review questions at the end of each chapter are simple yes/no questions. I would have liked "proper" multiple choice.- Maybe it's just me, but I'm not entirely happy with the typography. The index at the beginning could have benefitted from a different font and spacing - which is no biggie though. More importantly the code samples could have had syntax highlighting and clearer separation from the rest of the text. (I read the pdf version so your mileage may vary.)- For some things, like comparing different VM types/sizes, storage plans, etc. I would have liked to see some tables/matrices as that makes it easier to memorize the alternatives. Yes, of course some details could change, and the book links to the updated official docs, but I still would have liked if there were a few more tables in the book.If the ratings system allowed me to deduct half a star it's possible I would have done so, but these snags are minor enough that they don't warrant taking away an entire star :)

Invaluable resource to guide you through the services covered by the 70-535 exam. I highly recommend it alongside the Azure documentation at azure.microsoft.com.The kindle version on an iPad/tablet is the most useful since the book has a lot of links for further reading.
