Hands-on Kubernetes on Azure, Third Edition

Section 1: The Basics

In Section 1 of this book, we will cover the basic concepts that you need to understand in order to follow the examples in this book.

We will start this section by explaining the basics of these underlying concepts, such as containers and Kubernetes. Then, we will explain how to create a Kubernetes cluster on Azure and deploy an example application.

By the time you have finished this section, you will have a foundational knowledge of containers and Kubernetes and will have a Kubernetes cluster up and running in Azure that will allow you to follow the examples in this book.

This section contains the following chapters:

  • Chapter 1, Introduction to containers and Kubernetes
  • Chapter 2, Getting started with Azure Kubernetes Service

Key benefits

  • Get to grips with the fundamentals of containers and Kubernetes
  • Deploy containerized applications using the Kubernetes platform
  • Learn how you can scale your workloads and secure your application running in Azure Kubernetes Service

Description

Containers and Kubernetes containers facilitate cloud deployments and application development by enabling efficient versioning with improved security and portability. With updated chapters on role-based access control, pod identity, storing secrets, and network security in AKS, this third edition begins by introducing you to containers, Kubernetes, and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and guides you through deploying an AKS cluster in different ways. You will then delve into the specifics of Kubernetes by deploying a sample guestbook application on AKS and installing complex Kubernetes apps using Helm. With the help of real-world examples, you'll also get to grips with scaling your applications and clusters. As you advance, you'll learn how to overcome common challenges in AKS and secure your applications with HTTPS. You will also learn how to secure your clusters and applications in a dedicated section on security. In the final section, you’ll learn about advanced integrations, which give you the ability to create Azure databases and run serverless functions on AKS as well as the ability to integrate AKS with a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline using GitHub Actions. By the end of this Kubernetes book, you will be proficient in deploying containerized workloads on Microsoft Azure with minimal management overhead.

Who is this book for?

If you are an aspiring DevOps professional, system administrator, developer, or site reliability engineer interested in learning how to get the most out of containers and Kubernetes, then this book is for you.

What you will learn

  • Plan, configure, and run containerized applications in production.

An excellent hands-on guide to AKS. The examples are well structured and support the text well. The book does cover a wide range of topics including all the essentials: security, deployment, and monitoring. A book cannot be all things to all people - there is a light overview but those without some familiarity with Docker and/or containers might struggle.

If you’re new to AKS like i was, this is the book for youI’ve always found Kubernetes a bit daunting, but this book does a great job of explaining the concepts with great practical examples. I’m only on Chapter 10 so far, but I’ve already gained so much knowledge from it, and it’s been a worthwhile investment as i’m just about to set up our first cluster. I’d have been lost without this bookDon’t get me wrong - the MS docs are great aswell, but for tech like this, you can’t beat a good book like this to get into. It’s an investment that will 100% pay off in futureA few minor things that kept me from giving it 5 stars - the font used for the code examples is quite hard to read, and would be useful if they were also made available online as in some chapters, there’s a lot of typing to do that can be quite time consuming

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
