.Automated Testing in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Introduction to Automated Testing

I did finally get an agreement on writing a book on application test automation—one I had wanted to write for years already, as automated testing doesn't appear to be a love at first sight topic for many. And, like testing in general, in many implementations, it tends to be subordinate to requirements specifications and application coding, be it a project or a product. And, hell, who really loves testing? It is not typically what the average developer gets enthusiastic about. When raising the question during many of my workshops on automated testing, it often even takes a while for functional consultants to raise their hand.

Inevitably, I did pose the question to myself: do I love testing? And I answered it with a yes. A big YES. This subsequently led to additional questions, such as: what makes me love testing? Did I always love testing...

Why automated testing?

Plainly said: it all boils down to saving you a lot of hassle. There are no emotions or time-intensive execution will keep you from (re)running tests. It's just a matter of pushing the button and getting the tests carried out. This is reproducible, fast, and objective.

To clarify, automated tests are the following things:

  • Easy to reproduce
  • Fast to execute
  • Objective in its reporting

If it was as straightforward as that, then why haven't we been doing this in the Dynamics 365 Business Central world all those years? You probably can come up with a relevant number of arguments yourself, of which the most prominent might be: we do not have time for that. Or maybe: who's going to pay for that?

Why not?

...

When to use automated testing

Those are enough arguments to convince you why you would want to use automated tests, I guess. But how about when to use them? Ideally, this would be whenever code is changed to show that this functionality, already having been tested, is still working as it should, to show that recent modifications do not compromise the existing application.

This sounds logical, but what does this mean when you have no automated tests in place? How do you go about start creating your first ones? Basically, I would advise you to use the two following criteria:

  • What code change will give the highest return on investment when creating automated tests?
  • For what code change will your test automation creation improve your test coding skills the most?

Using these two criteria, the following kind of code changes are typical candidates for your first efforts:

  • After go...

What is automated testing?

We discussed why you might want to automate your tests and when to do this; or more specifically, where to start. But we didn't spend any thoughts on what automated testing is. So, let's do that before we conclude this chapter.

With automated testing, we address the automation of application tests, scripting manual application tests that check the validity of features. In our case, these are the features that reside in Dynamics 365 Business Central. You might have noticed that we have been using somewhat different terms for it:

  • Test automation
  • Automated tests
  • Automated testing

These all mean the same thing.

On one hand, automated testing is replacing manual, often exploratory, testing. It's replacing those manual tests that are reproducible and often no fun (anymore) to execute.

What is exploratory testing? Check out the following link...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed why you would want to automate your application tests, and when you might want to create and run them. And we concluded with a short description of the what—what is automated testing?

In Chapter 2, The Testability Framework, you will learn what technical features are built into the Dynamics 365 Business Central platform that enable us to run and create automated tests.

Key benefits

  • Leverage automated testing to advance over traditional manual testing methods
  • Write, design, and implement automated tests
  • Explore various testing frameworks and tools compatible with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Description

Dynamics 365 Business Central is the new cloud-based SaaS ERP proposition from Microsoft. It’s not as simple as it used to be way back when it was called Navigator, Navision Financials, or Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision. Our development practices are becoming more formal, and with this, the call for test automation is pressing on us. This book will teach you to leverage testing tools available with Dynamics 365 Business Central to perform automated testing. We’ll begin with a quick introduction to automated testing, followed by an overview of test automation in Dynamics 365 Business Central. Then you’ll learn to design and build automated tests and we’ll go through some efficient methods to get from requirements to application and testing code. Lastly, you’ll learn to incorporate your own and Microsoft tests into your daily development practice. By the end of the book, you’ll be able to write your own automated tests for Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Who is this book for?

This book is for consultants, testers, developers, and development managers working with Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Business Central. Being a book on automated testing techniques, it also caters to both functional and technical development teams.

What you will learn

  • Understand what automated tests are, and when and why to use them
  • Explore the five pillars of the Testability Framework of Business Central
  • Design and write automated tests for Business Central
  • Make use of standard automated tests and their helper libraries
  • Integrate automated tests into your development practice

It's fitting that Luc wrote 'the book' on automated testing, since he's been teaching about testing for many years. As you read this book, you will start to realize that because testing is an integral part of the development process, and because Business Central provides us with the tools to automate it, it is a small step to make test development a mandatory part of your BC development.Clear explanations, clear exercises, with real world application of decades of experience. This book is a MUST read for all #MSDyn365BC developers.By the way, the 1 star review on the Packt website was about the ordering/delivery process, not the book itself.

I knew next to nothing about automated testing before I started on this book, and I needed to create a test project for the AppSource Marketplace. This book made it easy to complete the project, and I came away with an appreciation for the power of automated testing as well. Clearly written, with lots of examples. Thanks, Luc!

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
