Learning VMware vSphere

Chapter 2. The Hypervisor – ESXi

VMware's ESXi is a piece of software that you install on a bare-metal server. ESXi creates a layer of abstraction that allows for virtual machines to run by utilizing the server's hardware resources independently. In the previous chapter, we learned how the hardware resources such as the CPU, memory, and I/O are virtualized with the help of the Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM). In this chapter, we continue discussing the architecture of the ESXi hypervisor. We will also learn different methods of deploying ESXi onto bare-metal servers.

We will cover the following topics in this chapter:

  • The architecture of ESXi
  • Laying the groundwork for an ESXi installation
  • Installing ESXi - the interactive method
  • Using the vSphere Client
  • Creating additional local users on an ESXi host
  • Using an ESXi Managed Object Browser (MOB)
  • Understanding other ESXi deployment methods

You can download ESXi for free if you register to evaluate the product at VMware&apos...

The architecture of ESXi

Chapter 1, An Introduction to Server Virtualization using VMware, introduced you to the architecture of a type-1 hypervisor and the differences between ESX Classic (no longer developed) and ESXi, in terms of their architecture.

The ESXi hypervisor is made up of the VMkernel, the User World layer and the Virtual Machine Monitors. What these components provide is the foundation for other processes to enable core functionalities.

The VMkernel layer

VMkernel is a Posix-like operating system which is primarily responsible for resource scheduling. In an effort to allocate a fair share of the hardware resources between all the hosted virtual machines, it creates a level of abstraction so that the guest operating systems on the virtual machines can consume resources like they would do on a physical machine, without interfering in the operations of the guest operating systems running on other virtual machines. VMkernel includes a storage stack which supports the use of a proprietary...

Laying the groundwork for ESXi deployment

When you buy server hardware from a chosen vendor you must make sure that the hardware features of the server meet the infrastructure design requirements and ESXi's hardware requirements. It is important to make sure that the make and model of the server hardware is listed as compatible in the VMware Compatibility Guide. Once that decision is made, and the servers are procured, you will need to prepare them for the hypervisor (ESXi) installation. The preparation will include buying licenses, configuring BIOS, and planning the locale for the hypervisor.

Note

VMware Compatibility Guide URL:  http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Licensing

VMware sells separate licenses for the hypervisor and the vCenter Server. Also, the Support and Subscription (Production or Basic) packages are sold separately. The vCenter Server is available in two editions, an Essential and a Standard Edition. Most of the features are licensed with the hypervisor. Hypervisor licenses...

Installing ESXi – the interactive method

ESXi can be installed onto a bare-metal server by running it through the interactive installer bundled with the hypervisor image that you have downloaded. You will need the ISO bundle to perform the interactive installation. You can either mount it to the server through its IPMI interface (HP ILO, Cisco KVM, or Dell DRAC) or burn the image onto a DVD and load that into the server's DVD ROM drive if you are using tower servers. Before you begin, make sure to configure the server's BIOS to boot from the CD ROM. Now, let's walk through the interactive installation procedure:

  1. When the server boots up from the ESXi image, you will be presented with the ESXi installer's standard boot menu, the first line item being the ESXi installer and the second being the option to boot from the local disk. Unless you want to boot from the local disk select the ESXi installer entry and hit Enter to load the installer into the memory. The process...

Using the vSphere Client

The vSphere Client is a program used to connect to a supported version of an ESXi host or a vCenter Server. The client can only be installed on a Microsoft Windows machine. The client uses TCP port 443 to establish a connection either with the ESXi host or the vCenter Server.

The client can be downloaded from the ESXi Getting Started web page, which can be accessed using the hostname or the IP address of the host:

Using the vSphere Client

On the Getting Started page, click on the hyperlink Download vSphere Client for Windows to download the installer. Once downloaded, the installation is pretty straightforward and requires no special details. Make sure, though, that it is installed on a machine which can reach the ESXi host or vCenter over the network.

Once the client is installed it can simply be executed by double-clicking the shortcut corresponding to that to bring up the VMware vSphere Client window.

In the VMware vSphere Client window, supply the IP address or the hostname of the ESXi...

Key benefits

  • Learn how server virtualization is achieved and how a virtual infrastructure is built using VMware’s products and solutions.
  • Design to create a scalable and responsive virtualization platform for hosting the virtual machine workloads of a business. Manage compute, network and storage resources of a virtual infrastructure.
  • Relevant conceptual diagrams, flowcharts and screen-captures enable in-depth comprehension of the concepts. Also, the concise writing style makes this book a very easy read.

Description

Computer virtualization is a method to enable the running of multiple application workloads on a machine to achieve efficient utilization and reduce the number of physical machines in a data center. This has now become the foundation of many modern day data centers. What began as a technology to virtualize x86 architecture has now grown beyond the limits of a server’s hardware and into the realm of storage and network virtualization. VMware is currently the market leader in developing data center virtualization solutions. This book goes into the details of designing and implementing VMware solutions that form the foundation of a VMware infrastructure. The book begins by introducing you to the concepts of server virtualization followed by the architecture of VMware’s hypervisor – ESXi and then by its installation and configuration. You then learn what is required to manage a vSphere environment and configure advanced management capabilities of vCenter. Next you are taken through topics on vSphere Networking, Storage, ESXi Clustering, Resource Management and Virtual Machine Management. You will then be introduced to SSL Certificate Management and its use in a vSphere environment. Finally, you will learn about the lifecycle management of a vSphere environment by effectively monitoring, patching and upgrading vSphere components using Update Manager. By the end of the book, you will know how to use VMware’s vSphere suite of components to lay the foundation of a modern day virtual infrastructure.

Who is this book for?

This is a book for any experienced technologist who is new to the realm of Data Center virtualization wanting to find a way to get a head start in learning how to design, implement and manage a modern day datacenter virtualized using VMware’s core infrastructure solutions. It could also act a comprehensive reference guide for Infrastructure Architects and System Administrators to aid them in their day to day activities. This book could easily find its place in reference materials used by professionals for VCP and VCAP certification exams. Keep in mind however that the book is not written to follow as a blueprint for either of the exams.

What you will learn

  • Understand the architecture of the hypervisor and learn how to install deploy and configure ESXi hosts
  • Find out what forms a VMware Virtual Machine can take and also learn how to create and manage them
  • Familiarize yourself with the concepts of vSphere Storage and learn how to present and manage storage in a vSphere environment
  • Create and manage software switching constructs such as the vNetwork Standard Switch and vNetwork Distributed Switches
  • Monitor the performance of a vSphere environment using tools such as the vCenter Performance Graphs and 'esxtop'
  • Manage SSL certificates in a vSphere environment
  • Upgrade and patch a vSphere environment using vSphere Update Manager
