Locking objects

InDesign provides you the ability to selectively show, hide, and lock objects. It’s worth noting that content is stacked one on top of another. The object that is was created or imported last appears on the top of the object stack, while the first object appears at the bottom. This hierarchy can be changed at will. In our example, we will ensure that the background image is at the bottom of the object stack. We will lock the background image so we don’t inadvertently move or edit it as we create objects above it. These objects will include borders, graphics, and text. To lock the background image we just placed, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the Selection tool Graphical user interface, application  Description automatically generated and click on the object to make it active.
  2. Choose the Layers panel. If it is not visible, select it from the Window menu.
  3. Click on the Twirldown arrow to the left of Layer 1. You will see our image is labeled <03 Park Image.jpg>.
