VMware vRealize Operations Performance and Capacity Management

Chapter 2. Capacity Management in SDDC

Capacity management changes drastically with virtualization. In this chapter, we will explain why it is one of the areas that is greatly impacted by virtualization. We will cover the following topics:

  • Why capacity management is split into two distinct areas
  • How you should perform capacity management at the VM level
  • How you should perform capacity management at the infrastructure level

We explain how each component (compute, storage, and network) are changed and how you should plan for it.

Shift in capacity management

The changes to capacity management can be largely grouped into two areas:

  • Operationally, virtualization changes the IT infrastructure team from system builder to service provider. The application team no longer own the physical infrastructure, and it is now a shared infrastructure. This creates a two-tier capacity management:
    • At the VM level, capacity management is done by the application team. They determine the size of their VM, and then buy the capacity from the infrastructure team. They need to adjust the size, as oversizing leads to performance issues.
    • At the physical infrastructure level, the infrastructure team must perform capacity management as a single team. The joint team must take care of computing, networking, storage, and DR. The mindset has to change from that of a system builder to a service provider.
  • Architecturally, the infrastructure moves from a bespoke system to standardized hardware. The application team no longer need to dictate the specifications...

Capacity management at the VM level

There are some tips you can give to your customers and policies you can set to keep things simple. For a start, keep the building blocks simple—one VM, one OS, one application, and one instance. So, avoid having one OS running the web, app, and DB server or avoid having one Microsoft SQL server running five instances of databases. The workload can become harder to predict as you cannot isolate them. It is recommended to adjust the size of the peak workload for a production environment. A month-end VM needs to be sized based on the month-end workload. For a non-production environment, you may want to tell the application team to opt for a smaller VM, because the vSphere Cluster where the VM is running is oversubscribed. The large VM may not get the CPU it asks for if it asks for too many.

Be careful with those VMs that have two distinct peaks: one for CPU resources and another one for memory resources. I have seen this with a telecommunications client...

Capacity management at the infrastructure level

At the infrastructure level, you look at the big picture. Hence, it is important that you know your architecture well. One way to easily remember what you have is to keep it simple. Yes, you can have different host specifications—CPU speed, amount of RAM, and so on in a cluster. But, that would be hard to remember if you have a large farm with many clusters.

You also need to know what you actually have at the physical layer. If you don't know how many CPUs or how much RAM the ESXi host has, then it's impossible to figure out how much capacity is left. I will use storage as an example to illustrate why this is important. Do you know how many IOPS your storage has?

The majority of shared storage is shared with both ESXi and non-ESXi servers mounted. Even if the entire storage is dedicated to ESXi, there is still the physical backup server mounting it, and it might be doing array-based replication or a snapshot.

Some storage support...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed how you should approach capacity management in the virtual data center. We shared that there is a fundamental shift, resulting in a two-tier model. The application team performs capacity management at the VM layer, and the infrastructure team performs at the infrastructure layer.

In Chapter 1, Virtual Data Center – It's Not a Physical Data Center, Virtualized, we have explained in depth why virtualization has large ramifications in both architecture and operations. We also covered the impact to how we manage. In this chapter we focused on capacity management. We are now ready to dive deeper into the technical discussion. Chapter 3, Mastering the Key Counters in SDDC, will start it by discussing the counters and how they are used.

I have been a VMware employee for over seven years, working in the area of Performance and Capacity Management. I can say without reservation this is the book that VMware professionals have been awaiting for years. There is a huge need for clarity with these issues, in addition to many misconceptions and confusion. Iwan has done a great service to clarify these topics. If you are operating vSphere, this is a must read even if you are not using vRealize Operations (or it's predecessor, vCOPs). The principles of managing performance and capacity in virtualized environments alone are worth the purchase price of this book. Well done Iwan!!!

great book, must have book and tool if you are 70% virtualized and still using stone age monitoring tools that do not differentiate between physical host and vm.

The book excels the treatment of topics for a diverse audience, discussing topics from the fundamental differences between the physical and virtual data center physical (as a CxO would understand it) to the deep-dive into a subject whose documentation has been remarkably little in the past : vROPs metrics definitios and its relationship with vCenter. So a comprehensive approach that focuses on important and often overlooked issues, makes the book a valuable resource. As if the contributions mentioned were not enough, Iwan Rahabok adds a chapter on a topic that is usually treated very operatively but has lacked the component of planning and design: creating vROPs custom dashboards that, altough implies require Advanced or Enterprise Licensing, is a feature that definitely exploits a lot of the vROPs potential for preventive monitoring and visualization of key indicators of the virtual data center.

This is a great starter book for anyone who wants to take a deep dive into performance analysis in vSphere environments. It explains the various nuances of performance in great detail and provides a lot of useful examples to help the reader understand virtualization specific concepts. I enjoyed the comparisons the author provides on what metrics you get from vCenter versus vROps, how they differ, and what to pay attention to. The only shortcoming I can see is that the author does not provide the formulas for the Super Metrics he recommends you create in vROps. However, he does go into some Super Metrics and related topics on his blog. Enjoy!

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
