MCSA Windows Server 2016 Certification Guide: Exam 70-741

Configuring DNS

In the second chapter, we will cover the Domain Name System (DNS) support and server role in the Windows Server 2016 operating system. After implementing IP addressing correctly, we can proceed with the installation of the DNS server role. This chapter explains the DNS installation requirements and proceeds on to more advanced topics that are needed for the DNS to function correctly. These include the configuration of root hints, forwarders, and DNS policies, and the configuration and management of zones and records.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Installing DNS servers
  • Configuring DNS servers
  • Configuring DNS zones

Technical requirements

As mentioned in the previous chapter, in order to build your own lab, you will need the Windows Server 2016 operating system – either the Standard edition or the Enterprise edition. In order to build a lab to prepare for the exam, you can use Hyper-V on Windows Server or the Windows client operating systems. You can practice on real hardware as well, but it is more convenient and time-effective to practice in a virtualized environment. Any virtualization environment or hypervisor will do, and you can set up a practice lab in Microsoft Azure as well.

Installing DNS servers

In this section, we will address the requirements for installing the DNS server role in Windows Server 2016. Before we proceed, let's take a look at name resolution fundamentals.

Windows Server and the Windows client operating systems use name resolution to translate or map numerical IP addresses – which are used for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) communication – to computer names, which are easier to remember. Windows operating systems use two types of names in name resolution: host names and NetBIOS names.

For resolving host names to IP addresses, Windows operating systems DNS is used, and for resolving NetBIOS names, Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is used. The hostname can contain letters, numbers, hyphens, and periods, and can be up to 255 characters long. Hostname can exist in nickname form or domain...

Configuring DNS servers

After installing the DNS server role on a Windows Server computer, you need to configure the DNS server role before a server can respond to name resolution queries, store database copies, and perform other relevant DNS server tasks.

Configuring the DNS server

To perform an initial DNS server configuration, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Server Manager, click on the Tools menu, and then click on DNS. Alternatively, open the Start menu, expand Windows Administrative Tools, and then click on DNS.
  2. A DNS Manager window opens; under the DNS node, a current server name is displayed. In this example, SRV2 is a local server on which a DNS server role is installed.
  3. Right-click on the server name and click...

Configuring DNS zones

DNS organizes and manages the namespace database in a specific physical structure using zones. Zones are physical namespace boundaries that contain information about one or more domains and their members:

For example, the itdemolabs.com zone contains both the itdemolabs.com and helsinki.itdemolabs.com domains. Other domains are stored and managed in two separate zones, with each having its own separate zone database.

There are three types of DNS zones, as follows:

  • Primary zone: This is the original zone, or the first created copy of a database, where all zone resources are managed.
  • Secondary zone: This is the read-only copy of the primary zone and it is updated and managed using zone updates and zone transfers from the primary zone.
  • Stub zone: This is the read-only copy of the primary zone database that contains only the resource records needed to locate...

Summary

In this chapter, we first looked at the requirements and the installation of the DNS server role in Windows Server 2016. Then, we learned how to configure DNS server roles and the different DNS zones. In the next chapter, we will install and configure DHCP server roles.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access.
