The Importance of a Roadmap

Not having a roadmap in place is no different than leaving your home to go on vacation without having any plans. You will be faced with questions such as:

  1. Where will you go?
  2. How will you get there?
  3. Do you have enough money?
  4. What will you do when you get there?
  5. Will there be availability wherever you go?

A roadmap is essentially a plan for a cybersecurity program that defines how you are going to get to your next destination. As you begin to build your plan, creating roadmaps will provide the guidance, foundation, and structure to efficiently work through what is needed to meet the goals of your plan. In essence, your roadmap will tie back to your mission and vision for the cybersecurity program, which we briefly covered in the Mission and Vision section of Defining the Cybersecurity Organization in Chapter 2, Setting the Foundations.
