Storage Spaces Direct is the Microsoft implementation of software-defined storage that comes with Windows Server 2016. This technology uses servers with local-attached drives to create highly available storage for a smaller price than traditional Storage Array Network (SAN) solutions. Storage Spaces Direct can be deployed in two different architecture, Converged and Hyper-Converged. Converged is used in scenarios where you want to use separate clusters for storage and compute, while Hyper-Converged give you the ability to use same cluster for storage and compute. In this section, you'll learn what is required for Storage Spaces Direct and how to implement this technology on Windows Server 2016.
