Identifying the options for using unmanaged packages

Unmanaged packages are a feature of the Lightning Platform that enables you to create packages that contain a set of metadata items that can be uploaded from the current org to one or more Lightning Platform orgs that are not associated with a common production org.

The typical use case for unmanaged packages is building a private template app or a set of change items that can be later modified, or distributing a public free metadata source to provide Lightning App developers with a framework or proof of concept from which to build an app or solution.

After an unmanaged package has been deployed to a Lightning Platform org, the metadata items that are included in the package can be modified and extended within the org where they have been installed.
