Database instances is a central part of the Amazon RDS. We can provision the DB instances, which deploys any of the supported database engines. The user can create multiple databases (schemas) in the DB instance.
We need to provide a unique identifier to the DB instance. This identifier needs to be unique across the AWS region for our account. Also, while creating the DB instance, we need to choose the database engine. Different database engines have different configuration parameters. We can either provide the configuration parameters at the time of creation or after it is being created. We also need to choose the DB instance class, which is important as it defines the computation and memory capacity of the DB instance.
For more details on the DB instance class, refer to http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstanceClass.html.
