Reviewing the WCAG

The WCAG is a set of guidelines developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to ensure that web content is accessible to people with disabilities. The guidelines are based on four principles:

  • Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presented to users in ways they can perceive
  • Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable
  • Understandable: Information and user interface components must be understandable
  • Robust: Content must be robust enough to be interpreted by a variety of user agents, including assistive technologies

Further, based on these principles, the guidelines are divided into three levels of conformance:

  • Level A: These are the most basic requirements for accessibility
  • Level AA: These are more stringent requirements than Level A
  • Level AAA: These are the most stringent requirements, more than Levels A and AA
