Hands-On Cloud-Native Microservices with Jakarta EE

Microservices and Reactive Architecture

The global market is rapidly evolving and with it the business models that have led the main companies, both in the IT field and beyond, in the last decades.

The need to be the first to market their products has become the mantra of companies. In a phase like this, where social media, and the internet in general, allow you to quickly spread your brand and quickly influence the market, being quick to release proposals that intercept the needs of society is the key to success.

Numerous market analyses have been presented in this regard, which depicts a state of deep transformation. Here are some examples:

  • By 2020, more than 75% of the S&P 500 will be companies that we have not heard of yet
  • By 2020, every business will become a digital predator or digital prey
  • Among surveyed executives, 87% believe digital technologies will disrupt their...

MicroProfile and the principles of MSA

In this section, we will describe the basic principles of microservices and their features, and present the benefits and the drawbacks of this new way of designing and building applications.

What are microservices?

Microservice architecture is based on the concept that an application should contain a collection of loosely coupled, independent, and atomic services, which implement business capabilities. Using this approach, it's easy to build software that splits a big enterprise application, also known as a monolith, into smaller and consistent contexts, known as microservices.

It also enables the fast evolution of a company's technology stack, thanks to the building of autonomous...

SOA versus MSA

Service-oriented architecture is a way to design software where the business services communicate through a standard communication protocol, usually Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), over a network. The main target of an SOA is to be independent of vendors, products, and technologies. The principal unit of an SOA is the service—a small unit of functionality that can be accessed remotely, and acted upon and updated independently.

The communication between services happens via direct exchange of data or it could involve two or more services that are coordinated by an orchestrator, Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) that is responsible for managing the execution flow.

There are two main roles in an SOA—a service provider and a service consumer. The first one is the service that's defined within the SOA while the second one is the point where consumers...

From monolith to microservices

Usually, large organizations have already invested a large number of resources in existing monolith applications that represent the core of their business.

According to Gartner research (Kurt Potter, Sanil Solanki, and Ken McGee, Run, Grow, and Transform the Business IT Spending: Approaches to Categorization and Interpretation, Gartner G00308477, June 27, 2016):

"The CIO of a company invests 70% of his budget to maintain the current portfolio, 19% to evolve the existing applications and only 11% to build new applications."

Besides, there are also some examples, such as the one described in The Majestic Monolith (https://m.signalvnoise.com/the-majestic-monolith-29166d022228), that demonstrate that a monolith application is not the devil like someone has said.

So, why tear down the monolith?

The response is always the same. In most cases...

Reactive systems and reactive programming

The term reactive is widely used in the definition of MSAs.

But what is a reactive architecture based on? The definition of reactive is to give an answer after a stimulus. Reactive software is, therefore, able to adapt its behavior and react to receive stimuli.

To build a reactive architecture for microservices, the following models must be combined:

  • Reactive programming: A development model based on the observation of streams of data, which provides a way to react to their changes and propagate them toward other actors
  • Reactive system: An architectural model that is used to build robust and highly reactive distributed systems based on asynchronous communication using messages

The definition of a reactive system was formalized, in version 2.0, in September 2014 through the reactive manifesto (https://www.reactivemanifesto.org/). The...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed microservices, MSAs and reactive architectures, as well as the principles of SOAs. We learned how to modernize an application, thus transforming a monolith into an MSA. We also reviewed how the main opensource frameworks, like Spring and Vert.x, have implemented reactive principles in order to help developers build cloud-oriented applications that are scalable, reliable, and cost-effective. Finally, we learned how you can update your traditional JEE applications in order to implement an asynchronous and non-blocking system as the first step toward building your own MSA.

In the next chapter, we will look at cloud-native applications and microservices so that we can understand how to design and implement them.

Key benefits

  • Build robust cloud-native applications using a variety of tools
  • Understand how to configure both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Docker clouds for high availability
  • Explore common design patterns used in building and deploying microservices architecture.

Description

Businesses today are evolving rapidly, and developers now face the challenge of building applications that are resilient, flexible, and native to the cloud. To achieve this, you'll need to be aware of the environment, tools, and resources that you're coding against. The book will begin by introducing you to cloud-native architecture and simplifying the major concepts. You'll learn to build microservices in Jakarta EE using MicroProfile with Thorntail and Narayana LRA. You'll then delve into cloud-native application x-rays, understanding the MicroProfile specification and the implementation/testing of microservices. As you progress further, you'll focus on continuous integration and continuous delivery, in addition to learning how to dockerize your services. You'll also cover concepts and techniques relating to security, monitoring, and troubleshooting problems that might occur with applications after you've written them. By the end of this book, you will be equipped with the skills you need to build highly resilient applications using cloud-native microservice architecture.

Who is this book for?

This book is for developers with basic knowledge of Java EE and HTTP-based application principles who want to learn how to build, test and scale Java EE microservices. No prior experience of writing microservices in Java EE is required.

What you will learn

  • Integrate reactive principles in MicroProfile microservices architecture
  • Explore the 12-factors-app paradigm and its implications
  • Get the best out of Java versions 8 and 9 to implement a microservice based on Thorntail
  • Understand what OpenShift is and why it is so important for an elastic architecture
  • Build a Linux container image using Docker and scale the application using Kubernetes
  • Implement various patterns such as, Circuit Breaker and bulkheads
  • Get to grips with the DevOps methodology using continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD)

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
