Mastering XenApp??

Chapter 2. Initiating the Hypervisor

In this chapter, we will be setting up the hypervisor for our application and desktop delivery via XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6.

Before we start, let's try to understand what can be done with the help of virtualization.

With the help of virtualization, we get the ability to virtualize multiple virtual machines, and at the same time, run on a single physical host. Virtual machines (VMs) running on a host are completely independent from other machines and separated from the host by a software operating system known as hypervisor.

XenApp and XenDesktop have the architecture that is designed to allow the management of a virtual desktop and application hosting server to run on multiple hypervisors. In this module, we will go through step by step on how to configure the hypervisor for application and desktop delivery via XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6.

Once done with this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Install the hypervisor
  • Install the hypervisor management...

Virtualization

Virtualization gives us the ability to create the virtual environment, which support a multiple guest operating systems. Hypervisor OS is used to divide the physical host into multiple virtual machines, wherein each machine has its own operating system. In this, we can virtualize:

  • Server operating system
  • Desktop operating system
  • Virtual appliances, which can be used as network/security devices

Components

We need three things in order to utilize the host (physical machine) resources such as CPU, HDD, and Network cards so that the guest operating system can run on the host and this combination is also known as platform virtualization, which will let us create the emulated environment:

  • Hypervisor: This is software which will be installed on the bare metal and will then enable the physical host to run multiple virtual machines on it with their own dedicated virtual hardware
  • Guest operating system: This is software which will be installed on the virtual hardware
  • Virtual machines: This is a separate computer which will be represented to users with their own network identity, operating system, configured applications, and data

Hypervisor for XenApp® and XenDesktop® 7.6

The XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 architectures support the following hypervisor:

  • Citrix XenServer
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • VMware vSphere

In this book we will use the XenServer to virtualize the virtual machine which will be required for application and desktop delivery.

Why XenServer®

According to Citrix and other lab tests, XenServer is the most effective hypervisor that can be used to deliver the best-in-class application and desktop delivery. GPU virtualization increases graphic performance; new 64-bit kernel, which improves networking and storage performance; and workload geo-tagging to restrict the work load to run in the particular location for security reasons.

Installing the XenServer® host

In this book, we will be using XenServer 6.2. If you want to know more about this feature, you can go to http://www.citrix.com/products/xenserver/overview.html, and download the media files from www.citrix.com/xenserver.

Before we begin to install XenServer, let's take a look at some of the system requirements:

  • The hardware must support HVM (Intel-VT or AMD-V enabled)
  • Minimum 4 GB memory required
  • At least 36 GB hard disk
  • At least one network card

Once the preceding requirements are met, perform the following steps to install XenServer:

  1. Insert the XenServer...

Connecting XenCenter® to the XenServer® host

To connect XenCenter to the XenServer host, follow these steps:

  1. Launch XenCenter.
  2. The program opens to the Home tab.
  3. Click on Add New Server as shown in the following screenshot:
Connecting XenCenter® to the XenServer® host
  4. Enter the IP address of the XenServer host in the Server field. Type the root username and password that you set during XenServer installation. Click on Add.
  5. The first time you add a new host, the Save and Restore Connection State dialog box appears. This enables you to set your preferences for storing your host connection information and automatically restoring host connections.

If you later need to change your preferences, you can do so using XenCenter or the Windows Registry Editor.

To do so in XenCenter, select Tools and then Options. The Options dialog box opens. Select the Save and Restore tab and set your preferences. Click on Ok to save your changes.

To do so using the Windows Registry Editor, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Citrix\XenCenter key...

Configuration of storage repository

A pool is comprised of multiple XenServer host installations, bound together as a single managed entity. When combined with shared storage, a pool enables VMs to be started on any XenServer host in the pool that has sufficient memory and then dynamically move between hosts while running (XenMotion), with minimal downtime. If an individual XenServer host suffers a hardware failure, you can restart the failed VM(s) on another host in the same pool.

If the High Availability (HA) feature is enabled, protected VMs are automatically moved in the event of a host failure.

To set up shared storage between hosts in a pool, you need to create a storage repository. A XenServer storage repository (SR) is a storage container in which virtual disks are stored. SRs, like virtual disks, are persistent, ondisk objects that exist independently of XenServer. SRs can exist on different types of physical storage devices, both internal and external, including local disk devices...

This book states that it is aimed at (at least) the administrator who has some experience with operating XenApp but wants to learn how to implement it. After reading through it, I'd add that it's aimed at the (current or soon-to-be) enterprise administrator (one who has experience with Microsoft's various protocols like Active Directory, DHCP, Kerberos, and similar)Because I'm attempting to learn the entire thing from scratch, I had to research some of the acronyms (FMA, POC lab, etc.). I've worked with vSphere and vCenter, where concepts are familiar but implementation is different enough that I could easily cause problems. Having this book kept me out of trouble.I'd recommend this book to anyone just starting out as a XenApp implementer. The book provides step-by-step procedures (with screen captures) for setting up an instance of XenApp 7.6.

I have to admit that I was kind of tense going into this book but only because I knew how much XenApp has changed from 6.x to 7.x. I didn't know what to expect but I can tell you that I am extremely glad that I picked up this book. Sunny has done a fantastic job with this one. It is over 250 pages of step-by-step and how-to info. There is no fluff at all. It's all "meat and potatoes" as they say. It is a great companion to the other Packt book Getting Started with Citrix XenApp 7.6. After reading both and a very small amount of lab time, I'm confident that I can go get certified tomorrow.

A very good book that concentrates to all themes of the newest Version of Citrix XenApp 7.6. Each chapter gives an overview and deep insight in technical details. Exactly what you need for the daily business. My favorite chapter is about configure Citrix policies. There are some tips I did not know so far. I would buy this book again.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
