Designing highly available and secure WAN links

What about when even one Direct Connect link is not enough? When a requirement for high availability or more performance is expressed, then we should be looking at multiple connections to provide connectivity from on-premises to AWS.

When designing a highly available solution, we should always consider the following aspects:

  • Reliability
  • Routing
  • Encryption

Reliability

So, how do we achieve reliability when connecting our hybrid network? With the basic VPN, high availability is already included. Each VPN connection will have two tunnels that can be configured to route the same network through BGP priorities. This built-in redundancy is demonstrated in the following diagram:
