Enhanced networking – fundamentals, capabilities, and use cases
Enhanced networking for EC2 is delivered through supported EC2 instance types. The Elastic Network Adapter (ENA) provides high-performance networking capabilities with improved networking performance by reducing latency, jitter, and packet loss, leading to better throughput, lower CPU utilization, and more consistent performance compared to traditional networking.
Enhanced networking leverages hardware and software optimizations to achieve these improvements. The optimizations include the usage of custom drivers and single root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV), which allows instances to communicate directly with the network hardware, bypassing the hypervisor layer, thus ultimately reducing CPU overhead and latency.
