Apache Ignite Quick Start Guide

Understanding the Topologies and Caching Strategies

In Chapter 1, Getting Familiar with Apache Ignite, we learned about various features and the architecture of Apache Ignite; this chapter covers the bare bones of Apache Ignite. We'll look at Apache Ignite clustering, caching topology, and caching strategies. Clustering, caching topology, and caching strategies solve different enterprise architecture problems. In this chapter, we are going to cover the following topics:

  • CAP theorem and Apache Ignite
  • Clustering architecture
  • Caching topology
  • Clustering strategy

CAP theorem and Apache Ignite

Apache Ignite supports distributed transactional cache operations, and at the same time it is highly available. Supporting both ACID transactions and high availability is a big ask for any distributed data store. Distributed data stores follow the CAP theorem. Computer scientist Eric Brewer proposed the CAP theorem, and it says that a distributed data store cannot offer more than two of the following three capabilities:

  • Consistency: You will always get the latest and greatest data. Suppose you have two nodes, A and B, and someone is updating a document/record in node B and you are reading that same record from node A. You should get the latest update made to the record in node B.
  • Availability: You should always get a response; it may not be the latest data, but it should not throw an error.
  • Partition tolerance: This means that if you remove the network...

Clustering architecture

Apache Ignite offers an out of the box clustering mechanism and APIs to perform various caching activities. This section is going to cover the following clustering features:

  • Node discovery
  • Node deployment
  • Cluster grouping

Node discovery

Apache Ignite is designed to scale elastically by adding more nodes to the cluster. The addition of a new node or removal of a node is transparent to the cluster. It depends on inter-node communication and doesn't rely on a master node to maintain the cluster. As of version 2.5, Apache Ignite supports two types of node discovery:

  • TCP/IP discovery
  • ZooKeeper discovery

We will explore both of these discovery types.

...

Caching topology

The Apache Ignite caching API provides three caching modes to distribute cache elements:

  • Local
  • Partitioned
  • Replicated

Local

The local mode is similar to JVM caching using a HashMap. Data is local to the node and not distributed to any other nodes of the cluster. The following are the benefits of the local mode:

  • Fastest data access as there is no need for network operations
  • Fastest data modification

The main drawback of this approach is if there is more than one JVM that needs to access the same data, then more than one local cache will be created. A local cache is useful for read-only data access where the JVM doesn't need to update any cache elements. Still, a local cache is way better than hashmap...

Caching strategy

Apache Ignite offers three strategies to access data from a distributed cache:

  • Cache aside
  • Read-through and write-through
  • Write behind

Cache aside

In the cache aside strategy, the Apache Ignite cluster doesn't interact with the persistence storage; the application takes the responsibility to read data from the persistence storage and update the cache. First, the application looks up the cache for data if the data is available in the cache then returns it; otherwise, it goes to the persistence storage to fetch the data and updates the cache so that the next cache lookup can return the value from the cache. The following diagram represents the cache aside architecture:

The application updates the cache...

Summary

In this chapter, we looked at the Apache Ignite caching architecture. We started by explaining the CAP theorem for distributed data stores and how Apache Ignite can be tuned to use AP or CP. Apache Ignite has an efficient clustering API; we looked at the various clustering configurations such as node discovery, node deployment, and node grouping.

This chapter also explored the caching modes used to distribute data. We looked at local, partitioned, and replicated cache modes and how scalability, availability, and read/write performance can be tuned using the caching modes.

This chapter concluded with the caching strategies: cache aside, read-through and write-through, and write-behind. The next chapter will explain the data grid concept and explore the web session clustering technique.

Key benefits

  • Understand Apache Ignite's in-memory technology
  • Create High-Performance app components with Ignite
  • Build a real-time data streaming and complex event processing system

Description

Apache Ignite is a distributed in-memory platform designed to scale and process large volume of data. It can be integrated with microservices as well as monolithic systems, and can be used as a scalable, highly available and performant deployment platform for microservices. This book will teach you to use Apache Ignite for building a high-performance, scalable, highly available system architecture with data integrity. The book takes you through the basics of Apache Ignite and in-memory technologies. You will learn about installation and clustering Ignite nodes, caching topologies, and various caching strategies, such as cache aside, read and write through, and write behind. Next, you will delve into detailed aspects of Ignite’s data grid: web session clustering and querying data. You will learn how to process large volumes of data using compute grid and Ignite’s map-reduce and executor service. You will learn about the memory architecture of Apache Ignite and monitoring memory and caches. You will use Ignite for complex event processing, event streaming, and the time-series predictions of opportunities and threats. Additionally, you will go through off-heap and on-heap caching, swapping, and native and Spring framework integration with Apache Ignite. By the end of this book, you will be confident with all the features of Apache Ignite 2.x that can be used to build a high-performance system architecture.

Who is this book for?

The book is for Big Data professionals who want to learn the essentials of Apache Ignite. Prior experience in Java is necessary.

What you will learn

  • Use Apache Ignite's data grid and implement web session clustering
  • Gain high performance and linear scalability with in-memory distributed data processing
  • Create a microservice on top of Apache Ignite that can scale and perform
  • Perform ACID-compliant CRUD operations on an Ignite cache
  • Retrieve data from Apache Ignite's data grid using SQL, Scan and Lucene Text query
  • Explore complex event processing concepts and event streaming
  • Integrate your Ignite app with the Spring framework

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
