Understanding MongoDB authentication

MongoDB authentication involves a number of different factors: the authentication database, the authentication mechanism, and the database user. The authentication database is the place where authentication information is stored. The authentication mechanism concerns how the authentication is to take place. Finally, the database user brings together one or more roles, the authentication mechanism, and the password. Before getting into the details, however, it's important to understand the difference between authentication and authorization.
