Architecting ASP.NET Core Applications

Principles and Methodologies

This section delves into the core architectural principles and testing methodologies that form the backbone of modern software engineering practices, setting a solid foundation for the book. By exploring these essential concepts, you gain the insights needed to navigate the complexities of software architecture and ASP.NET Core development.

We begin with an introduction to the book’s structure and the essential knowledge required to make the most out of it, including a brief overview of design patterns, their significance, and the role of experience in shaping architectural decisions. We emphasize understanding rather than memorizing patterns, encouraging you to experiment and learn through hands-on experimentation.

The journey continues with a look at automated testing, a critical component of software quality assurance. Chapter 2, Automated Testing, introduces the fundamentals of testing, including unit tests, integration tests, and the principles of test-driven development (TDD). With a focus on the xUnit framework, you will learn how to apply various testing strategies to improve code reliability and maintainability. This chapter introduces integrating testing into the development process, emphasizing its role in modern workflows.

We explore architectural principles in Chapter 3, Architectural Principles, where we dissect the building blocks of software architecture, including discussions on responsibility segregation, the significance of design patterns, and strategies for creating robust and scalable systems. The chapter aims to equip you with the knowledge to make informed architectural decisions, emphasizing the rationale behind common design choices.

Chapter 4, REST APIs, covers REST APIs, an essential aspect of modern web development. This chapter provides a practical guide to designing and implementing RESTful APIs, including best practices and considerations for security, performance, and scalability. Through this exploration, you will understand how REST APIs fit into the architectural landscape.

By the end of these chapters, you will understand crucial concepts and have a strong foundation in testing methodologies, architectural principles, and REST APIs. Tying these concepts together lays the groundwork for a successful journey into software architecture, development, and the rest of the book.

This section comprises the following chapters:

  • Chapter 1, Introduction
  • Chapter 2, Automated Testing
  • Chapter 3, Architectural Principles
  • Chapter 4, REST APIs

Key benefits

  • Learn multiple ways to organize your application code and become a more flexible ASP.NET Core developer
  • Explore hands-on design patterns, learn architectural principles, and how to sidestep anti-patterns
  • Refactor code toward modern application design, such as feature-based vertical slice and clean architecture

Description

This unique ASP.NET Core book will fill in the gaps in your REST API and backend designs. Learn how to build robust, maintainable, and flexible apps using Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns and modern architectural principles. This new edition is updated for .NET 8 and focuses exclusively on the backend, with new content on REST APIs, the REPR pattern, and building modular monoliths. You’ll start by covering foundational concepts like REST, the SOLID principles, Minimal APIs, dependency injection in .NET, and other ASP.NET Core 8 mechanisms. Then, you’ll learn to develop components using design patterns, including many from the GoF. Finally, you’ll explore organizing your application code with patterns that vary from layers to feature-oriented vertical slice designs, covering CQS and a deep dive into microservices along the way. A brand-new e-commerce project at the end of the book will tie it all together. This how-to guide will teach you how to assemble your own APIs from building blocks, to suit whatever real-world requirements you may have.

Who is this book for?

This book is for intermediate-level ASP.NET Core developers who want to improve their C# app code structure and API design skills. ASP.NET developers who want to modernize their knowledge and enhance their technical architecture skills will also like this book. It’s also a good refresher for those in software design roles with more experience looking to update their expertise. A good knowledge of C# programming and a basic understanding of web concepts is necessary to get the most out of this book, though some refreshers are included along the way.

What you will learn

  • Apply the SOLID principles for building flexible and maintainable software
  • Test your apps effectively with automated tests, including black-box testing
  • Embark on mastering ASP.NET Core dependency injection
  • Work with GoF design patterns including strategy, decorator, facade, and composite
  • Design REST APIs using Minimal APIs and ASP.NET Core MVC
  • Discover layering and the tenets of clean architecture
  • Use feature-oriented techniques as an alternative to layering
  • Explore microservices, CQS, REPR, vertical slice architecture, and many more patterns

I am enjoying a lot this book; I would say that it should be required reading for any backend .NET developer at intermediate and advanced levels.I found lots of very good material to learn, re-learn, unlearn, covering (in addition to the traditional GoF design patterns) the newest .NET 8 C#/ASP.NET API specific implementations of minimal APIs, microservices, vertical slicing, automated testing, etc. There are many other very good Architecture and Design Patterns books out there in general (ie: 'Clean Architecture') or specifically for the .NET platform (ie: 'Adaptive Code', 'Code that Fits in your Head') and others, but this book rounds up many essential and the latest concepts and presents them in a very comprehensive and appealing manner. The book focuses on the API/backend. It doesn't cover frontend .NET technologies like Blazor or MAUI; but perhaps it doesn't need to, there are many other books for those topics; it would have been nice, though, to maybe had covered couple of them (MVU, MVVM, etc.).I find the book a very interesting refresher, I'm still going through it and for me it's filling lots of gaps, gray areas and covering new ideas and design approaches. My specific approach is that I'm going through the concepts and examples step-by-step even if I feel I know the material.

This book was a great addition to my collection. I will say if you are a beginner in ASP.NET Core or are coming from another language or framework this book might be a little bit confusing. If you have been using C# and .NET for a few years or built a few apps with the language and framework then you should have no trouble with understanding the concepts taught in this book. The book is not a beginner's guide to ASP.NET Core but rather a book on the common design patterns implemented while using the framework. The author has done a great job on explaining the dos and don'ts of the framework and how you can follow in the footsteps of others to ensure a sound and secure application is built following the principles and patterns discussed. If you are looking to increase your architecting skills with ASP.NET Core and C# then this book will help guide you on that journey.
