Testing Practitioner Handbook

Chapter 2. Future of Testing Engagement Models – Are Predictions of Increased QA Spends Justified?

In this chapter, we will discuss the future of testing engagement models in light of current developments in digital space and increased adoption of Agile/DevOps models.

Would Dev-Ops shrink the amount of testing that is done in current world? If so, what would be the impact? As per WQR2016 findings, testing spend would increase up to 40% by organizations. How does this increased spend prediction align to the fact that more engagements would follow decentralized QA in Agile/DevOps life cycle?

How is QA effort spread

Let's discuss the following topics:

  • How QA effort is split between development and production support
  • Reasons for increase of QA effort in the design phase

Split of QA effort between development and production support

Share of QA spend in new development projects (as against enhancements/maintenance projects) has grown from 2012-13 to 2013-14 to 2014-15, from 41% to 46% to 52% respectively.

In 2015-16, the QA spend was split 50:50 between new development and production support.

In 2014-15, for the first time, the QA spend for Development exceeded the QA spend for production support. This is in line with more development projects with organizations undertaking more digital transformation related development work. Refer to the following graph:

Split of QA effort between development and production support

Increased QA efforts for new development – point of view

It is evident that when QA is done for new code (as against QA for maintaining/enhancing the existing code), QA effort will be higher.

Organizations are practicing...

QA organizations would follow hybrid QA teams (centralized and decentralized)

In this section, we will discuss the future organization of QA teams.

As per WQR2015, the use of internal independent industrialized test TCOE stabilized and would see decline.

Use of a combination of centralized and decentralized teams (Hybrid) for QA grew from 35% in 2013-14 to 43% in 2014-15.

WQR 2015 reported 24% respondents citing plans to have internal TCOE as against 24% in 2014-15 and 23% in 2013-14.

A total of 18% cited no plan for TCOE in 2015-16 as against 20% in 2014-15 and 26% in 2013-14.

A total of 11% cited plans to use third-party TCOE in 2015-16, as against 15% in 2014-15 and 19% in 2013-14.

Trend towards Hybrid QA teams – point of view

The preceding observations point to a need for testers to work with developers through life cycle—shift-left as well as shift-right. Use of dedicated TCOEs will not continue to rise as in the past and shall need to scale to provide services in platform as...

What will be the future of testing engagement models?

Analysts, such as Forrester, believe that traditional Managed Test Services (MTS) deals may be fewer in the future.

Recent Gartner Research findings suggest that MTS market will see a 15% growth. Organizations that are yet to mature in rolling out managed testing functions shall need to look at establishing an MTS organization while the organizations that have MTS organizations or equivalent need to look at Managed Test Operation (MTO) with aim to mature testing functions to Quality Assurance.

There is little doubt that organizations specializing in quality/test service offerings are looking at ways to align their models to client needs.

Both the providers as well as the clients are contemplating on the following questions:

  • Provider Perspective: What do our clients need? What are we offering?
  • Client Perspective: What do I need? What do I want my providers to offer?

Conclusion

In this chapter, we considered data points about an increased split of QA effort in development projects as against production support. This aligns with the need for more QA in new development projects associated with digital transformation. We also considered the trend of increased QA effort in the design phase, which aligns with the need for Shift-Left and Shift-Right principles in the DevOps life cycle.

We considered data points relating to the future of centralized with regard to the decentralized models of QA and concluded that the future will see the use of hybrid models. Organizations will continue to use MTS and Centralized COEs for business as usual functions to carry out QA efficiently. For the digital transformation initiatives and projects in the Agile/DevOps life cycle, the projects will carry out testing in the decentralized mode. Distributed Agile is an option that is also considered.

We then discussed future testing engagement models with a 3-plateau approach to...

Got the Paperbook delivered, and the printing / design is really good. Must have book for any QA Manager / Engineer in the software service Industry. Its a overview book for every details in the QA Industry. though Its sometimes not goes beyond overview (topics like testing mobile applications - Chapter 22 / automation in mobile application testing - Chapter 29)..On the other hand, this book has everything. from IOT to DevOps testing, Blockchain to e-health care. Authors experience with various domains, projects squeezed into a single book. I wish this could be added to university curriculum. Thank you Renu and all the people contributed / supported her to bring this book out.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
