Organizational anti-patterns

Sometimes, dysfunctions within the organization are reflected within the Scrum Team. This is more obvious in organizations transitioning to Scrum from more traditional, non-agile structures and methodologies. The most common organizational anti-patterns are as follows:

  • Re-shuffling the Scrum Team
  • Using velocity as a metric
  • Ignoring the Sprint Retrospective

Let’s take a closer look.

Re-shuffling the Scrum Team

In this anti-pattern, Developers, Product Owners, and even Scrum Masters are replaced every few months. This may happen for many reasons – for example, a high staff churn rate at the organization or personal or career-related reasons mean that Scrum Team members will often move on. Other times, however, such changes are signs of organizational dysfunction and misapplication of Scrum. Frequent Scrum Team changes may be due to the following reasons:
