Creating host and VM DRS groups


DRS provides an option to segregate virtual machines and ESXi hosts into their own groups. The groups are used with VM-Host Affinity Rules. These rules do not address individual VMs/hosts. These groups are created using the DRS Groups Manager.

The creation of DRS hosts/VMs groups is a pre-requisite for creating the affinity rules.

How to do it…

The following procedure will help you create host/VM DRS groups:

  1. From the vCenter's inventory home navigate to the Hosts and Clusters view.

  2. Select the cluster and navigate to Manage | Settings | DRS Groups and click on Add… to bring-up the Create DRS Group window.

  3. In the Create DRS Group window supply a name for the group, choose the type as Host DRS Group, and click on the Add button to bring-up the Add DRS Group Member window.

  4. In the Add DRS Group Member window, select the hosts that should be added to the group and click on OK.
