Creating new print projects

Unlike images intended for screen or use on the web, print projects require additional steps for managing the process from a digital desktop to ink and paper on a multitude of stock types. Mistakes in print can be costly; you don’t have the luxury of simply replacing a print image as you would with a web graphic.

Color

It is common for artwork to be composed of red, green, and blue (RGB) pixels displayed on a backlit RGB display. When your RGB document is printed, those pixels are printed as tiny dots of ink using combinations of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These are the four inks used by a commercial print bureau on a standard print run. This process can cause a shift in the appearance of color as they are converted, so it is important to manage this process with screen and printed proofs. Photoshop can simulate printed colors onscreen (soft proof), providing an approximation of what your RGB colors could look like when printed. However...
