In Chapter 1, The Industrial Internet Revolution, we described the evolution of today's Industrial Internet. Over the past decade, the pace of introduction of smarter edge devices and the ability to analyze massive amounts of data have greatly increased. New IIoT backend infrastructure deployments more frequently take place in flexible and highly scalable public clouds.

However, today's architecture remains complex and requires a broad mix of skills to properly design and implement a solution.
