Another compatibility issue comes from the TLS/SSL configuration options. In MongoDB 3 and MongoDB 4.0, in the configuration files for both mongod (MongoDB database daemon) and mongos (which is used to control a sharded cluster), you could add a series of options under the net.ssl (https://docs.mongodb.com/v4.0/reference/configuration-options/#net-ssl-options) key. As of MongoDB 4.2, these options are deprecated in favor of the net.tls options. The net.tls options have enhanced functionality compared with the net.ssl options.
