Protecting data in transit patterns

Problem

Data is exchanged between the requestor and receiver. How do we protect this data that is being exchanged or transmitted over the internet or intranet?

Context

The data exchanged or transmitted over the net is often referred to as data in transit or data in motion. In a hybrid multi-cloud world, data needs to be exchanged across several on-premise and cloud applications. There are several service-to-service communications that also happen on-premise or within the cloud that need to be protected. With digitization, the data is accessible from many devices by employees as well as users from customer and partner organizations. There are industry and geography-specific guidelines such as PCI DSS, GDPR, and HIPAA that mandate the data to be safeguarded meeting regulatory guidelines. Loss of data to the wrong hands can possibly incur financial penalties and reputational risks. Data in motion poses many risks...
