Printing Pitch Shift effects with AudioSuite
While being able to manipulate the pitch of a sound in real time is useful for a lot of situations, I find Pro Tool’s AudioSuite offerings in the pitch-shifting realm much more practical. In most scenarios, I want to have a pitch effect made permanent and printed, not changed in real time. An example is when trying to create variation with sound effects and foley in motion pictures. Sometimes, successive or repetitive impacts and certain sounds feel mechanical or artificial. By alternating the pitch of a sound effect as it repeats, the result is much more pleasant and “natural” to the audience. You can use pitch shifting to imply increases or decreases in momentum in a character or use it to match tones musically. Beyond using Pitch Shift II in AudioSuite to increase or decrease pitch without affecting timing, you also have two other powerful plugins that can be used – Time Shift and Vari-Fi.
