There is a wide range of third-party plugins for InDesign that allow you to create interactive documents containing functionality that goes beyond what can be found in interactive PDFs. For some years now, one of my favorites has been the In5 plugin from Ajar Productions. This reasonably priced add-on for InDesign allows you to export your documents from InDesign as HTML5-based digital magazines, providing a wide range of extra panels to add more advanced interactive functionality. Depending on your plan, you can even output responsive documents that lay out differently for different screen sizes and orientations.
