.NET Standard 2.0 Cookbook

Primitives, Collections, LINQ, and More

In this chapter, we will be covering the following recipes:

  • Building a .NET Standard 2.0 library that uses primitives
  • Building a .NET console application to use the library
  • Creating collections
  • Building a WPF application to use the library
  • Describing our library with Reflections
  • Building a .NET Core console application to use the library
  • Building a .NET Standard 2.0 library that uses LINQ
  • Building an ASP.NET MVC application to use the library

Technical requirements

Introduction

When you look at C# as a language, there are things we need to look at first: what C# can do, how it supports our day-to-day programming requirements, and how it helps us to solve a problem. In this chapter, we will be mainly looking at primitive data types, collections, and LINQ features supported in C#. In the full .NET Framework, using these features is not a problem, but when it comes to cross-platform and code shared across flavors of the .NET Framework, it does becomes a concern.

Each recipe will go through building a .NET Standard 2.0 library and how to use it with an application that uses a flavor of the .NET Framework.

Building a .NET Standard 2.0 library that uses primitives

In this recipe, we will have a look at C# primitives and their usage in a .NET Standard 2.0 library. Primitives are one of the core parts of the framework. These types are defined in the .NET Framework itself and not in the C# language specification.

We will be building a .NET Standard 2.0 library that uses primitives in the .NET Framework and use it in the next recipe.

Getting ready

As mentioned, primitive data types are defined under .NET Framework itself and it's not language specific. It means you can use these data types across all languages supported under .NET Framework. It doesn't mean you can use these primitives under different flavors...

A .NET console application to use the library

In this recipe we are going to do two things. First, we will be opening Visual Studio and doing a quick build of the previously built solution for the .NET Standard 2.0 library. Finally, we will be adding a .NET console application to use the library. This console application will be using .NET Framework 4.6.1 as the base framework under Windows.

Getting ready

Make sure you have completed the previous recipe that builds the .NET Standard 2.0 library. We will be using it in this recipe. Open Visual Studio 2017 and prepare for the project. Click Build | Build Solution, or press Ctrl + Shift + B, and the solution should build successfully...

Creating collections

There are three kind of collections supported inside the .NET Framework. In this recipe, we will be focusing on using these collections inside a .NET Standard 2.0 library. In general, collections are used to manage groups of related objects. Creating arrays of objects is a way of grouping related objects. But our focus is on using these collections, which is the second method of grouping related objects.

Getting ready

These are the three kinds of collections we have in .NET Framework:

  • System.Collections.Generic Classes
  • System.Collections.Concurrent Classes
  • System.Collections Classes

Let's have a look at these and their usage inside a .NET Standard 2.0 library.

...

A WPF application to use the library

In this recipe, we will be creating a Windows Presentation Foundation application to use the .NET Standard 2.0 library we created in the previous recipe. We will be continuing to build the application from the previous solution we created. Windows Presentation Foundation is a UI framework that works under .NET Framework and runs in a Windows OS.

Getting ready

Open Visual Studio 2017 and prepare for the project. Make sure you have completed building the .NET Standard 2.0 library in the preview build. Open that project if it's not already open and click Build | Build Solution, or press Ctrl + Shift + B, and the solution should build successfully. Everything...

Describing our library with Reflections

In this recipe, we will be building a class object that will have two public methods. After using a console application, we will be describing this class object using Reflections. A Reflection gives you the ability to read its own metadata of finding assemblies, type, and module information at runtime.

Getting ready

Make sure we have Visual Studio 2017 and all the updates installed. We will be starting with a blank solution. A blank solution is a very good starting point for any scale of project. Let's build our .NET Standard 2.0 library.

How to do it...

...

A .NET Core console application to use the library

Let's have a look at using Reflections in this recipe. We have built a small .NET Standard 2.0 library in the last recipe. Now we will be creating a .NET Core-based console application and use reflections to describe our library. We will be using the System.Reflection namespace and a few of its classes

Getting ready

Let's make sure you have completed the previous recipe and, if not, complete it and come back to this one. Open Visual Studio 2017 and locate and open the previously built .NET Standard library.

How to do it...

...

Technical requirements

Readers should have a basic knowledge of C#. They should also have a basic knowledge of using Visual Studio, installing packages using NuGet, and referencing libraries within projects from other projects.

Description

The .NET Standard is a standard that represents a set of APIs that all .NET platforms have to implement, making it easy for developers to access and use one common library for their development needs. This book begins with a quick refresher, helping you understand the mechanics of the new standard and offering insight into how it works. You’ll explore the core library concepts, such as working with collections, configurations, I/O, security, and multithreading. You’ll explore the iOS and Android libraries of Xamarin and we’ll guide you through creating a .NET Standard 2.0 library, which you’ll use with both Android and iOS applications. In the final chapters, you’ll learn the various debugging and diagnostics tools to deliver quality libraries and create a NuGet package of the .NET Standard 2.0 library. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to expand your current workflow to various .NET flavors and have the essential skills to create a .NET Standard 2.0 library from scratch to package and deliver it to the world.

It's extremely surface-level.It only shows you how to follow the different wizards in Visual Studio / Xamarin Mac and then add 10 lines of code (e.g. create new C# netstandard2 class library, how to add nuget metadata, create WPF application, create ASP.NET core web app, how to push to Azure using VS wizards, etc. etc.). This is stuff you can figure out in 5 minutes. There is no discussion about what happening behind the scenes when compiling or running a Xamarin app that uses netstandard2, no discussion on platform version compatibility with netstandard2, no discussion about how netstandard runs on Ubuntu, etc. This is little to no technical discussion about anything. If you want to know how to follow Wizards and add a few lines of crude code for instant gratification, this is the book for you. However, if you're a real professional looking to build real high-performance, high quality, fast and portable applications, this is not the book for you.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
