Applied SOA Patterns on the Oracle Platform

Chapter 2. An Introduction to Oracle Fusion – a Solid Foundation for Service Inventory

From this chapter onward, all discussions and examples will be based on the Oracle platform, products, and methodologies. In this chapter, we will discuss Oracle's technical implementation of abstract frameworks, as proposed in the first chapter. We will demonstrate that Oracle's technology stack can practically cover all the aspects of the service-oriented application's lifecycle, from development and implementation to monitoring and error handling. The degree of coverage essentially depends on the understanding and proper balancing of the SOA principles and the level of standards supported by Oracle's platform. Even though it has great coverage of service-oriented approaches and all SOA benefits, Oracle's platform also has certain limitations. These limitations will be discussed in the following chapters, which are dedicated to the patterns' realization...

The Oracle SOA technology platform

We have already defined ten SOA frameworks, of which six essential ones are quite SOA-specific. We will follow this notion until the last page, but we are not too eager to defend this logical segregation and will not force you to accept it blindly. If you already have a working framework model based on TOGAF (http://www.opengroup.org/togaf/) or ITIL (http://www.itil-officialsite.com/), that's perfectly fine. We chose this framework model for three reasons. First, this simplified model with concise but distinctive layers is quite well-accepted by both groups of practitioners—developers and operational personnel.

Second, and most importantly, this model is derived from Oracle's service implementation methodology (discussed later in the chapter). The third reason is purely empirical and based on Oracle's history of acquisitions and integration of different components into a solid application portfolio.

The Oracle SOA development roadmap...

Summary

Oracle has come a long way from ad-hoc apps that link to enterprise integration and finally, to the full-fledged service orientation. With no doubt, products from Collaxa, BEA, and Sun turned the single DB-company into one of the strongest Middleware players with the most advanced products in the portfolio. Importantly, we see that Oracle SOA's product stack is evolving and this evolution is guided by the open standards committees where Oracle is the one most active contributor and is influenced from partners and customers who bring business demands and challenges. At the same time, it is important for us not to follow this path blindly, trusting somebody else's strategy, but rather choose our own way of achieving the strategic goals. In this sense, Oracle is setting a good example by assembling its own and acquired products following the Composability principle and giving us a wide range of the tools, enabling service-oriented computing.

Oracle Applied SOA Patterns on Oracle Platforms by Sergey Popov covers all the rudiments required by the SOA Architects and Developers to architect and develop system integration solutions using Oracle SOA and OSB Stack. The book provides a synopsis of the various industry practices for integration and methodologies used for these integrations. Illustrates to design and develop design patterns using Oracle SOA provides and these best practices can be beneficial in completing systems integration projects. Each and every chapter of this book is written with the intent to:Find the root cause of the problem and analyze it in strong relevance to the SOA design principles.Speculate the decomposition of the problem into smaller, more manageable parts that could be implemented as separate atomic components or services.Identify the ways of standardizing the decomposed components/services, focusing on the improvement of their reuse.Propose various vendor-neutral solutions (not exactly Oracle) based on the identified components/services and, again, diligently analyze them using the SOA design principles, focusing on the desired SOA characteristics.Present the most optimal solution based on an Oracle platform and compare it to other alternatives proposed during the analysis phase. Since we are vendor-neutral and focus primarily on the preferred solution's characteristics, we cannot guarantee that Oracle realization will always win, but it will be the closest bet for most of the discussed use cases. The book starts with the SOA Ecosystem, illustrating various principals, patterns and frameworks, followed by an introduction to Oracle Fusion. Chapter three, discuses building the Enterprise Business Flows illustrating the significant concepts like the Service Inventory, Detailed Analysis Orchestration patterns. Chapter Five, discusses Service Repository concepts such as Taxonomy and Discoverability of services. Chapter Six, details the concepts on Adapters used in the SOA SCA. Security is discussed in detail in Chapter Seven. Exception handling patterns have been discussed in detail in chapter Eight. The books also covers Complex Event Processing and some very essential Design Patterns.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the SOA Design Patterns.Harvinder SalujaFor tutorials on Oracle SOA Stack, Please visit Harvinder Saluja's SOA/OSB/AI and Oracle Identity and Access Manager Blog.

After reading the book, I have finally found a fantastic source of SOA delivery experience concentrated in one book. It concentrates a lot of delivery experience in such an indispensable reference book. It doesn’t contain only integration patterns, but it also provides a set of best practices and recommendations very useful from the delivery perspective. When I was reading it, I was constantly saying “yes, he is right…” and “yeap, very good point” and “yeah.. I also had this problem in a project”...It is important to remark the initial chapter, that basically lands the theoretical SOA principles and concepts into our technological land, making them understandable and comprehensive from a really practical perspective, and, the most important thing, easy to read.

As a SOA Architect, I am always looking for relevant information, and the choices for SOA are relatively limited. So I had guarded optimism on this book. Although it is based on the Oracle SOA Platform, and my company is not using the Oracle SOA Platform, I found many of the Patterns to be both useful and in some cases unique. I highly recommend this book whether you are using the Oracle SOA Platform or not.

This book is highly recommended for architects and SOA Lead developers. Sergey and his team has done a commendable job in packing his experiences in orderly fashion. Chapter 1-3 refresh you with SOA principles, patterns & framework. If you are into oracle fusion then Chapter-2 provides you enough information on various oracle products, that complements the previous chapter. I found it useful where it explains how oracle product support various standards like WS-ReliableMessaging, WS-Addressing etc and its use in pattern implementation. Chapter-3 helps in setting the realistic expectation of oracle soa suite. This will also help the Lead developers to guide and mentor their team to optimally use and achieve right balance. Information about security layers, SOA Vulnerabilities and design rules mitigating risk are covered in depth. Overall a good book with many practical insight.
