Analyzing data with Power BI


Power BI is an analytics solution for various kinds of data study, evaluation, and presentation. With Power BI, it is possible to generate a wide variety of reports from a simple table view or bar chart to complex statistical data analysis.

Getting ready

Power BI must be installed to complete the following scenario. It is available to download from powerbi.microsoft.com.

How to do it...

Now we will build a report in Power BI presenting the sales report in a bar chart, with a simple hierarchy for periods.

  1. Run the Power BI application.

  2. In the Home tab of the ribbon, click Get Data, then choose SQL Server.

  3. In the connection setting dialog, enter the name of your SQL Server where the NAV database resides. By default, when installing NAV in Developer configuration, a new SQL instance is installed on locahost\NAVDEMO.

  4. Enter the database name. The default name for the demo database is Demo Database NAV (9-0). The database name is optional in this step, and can be selected later...
