With over 20+ chapters in this book covering Unity as a whole, you'll be making games in no time! From installing Unity to creating your very first project, this book has it all. I was taken aback at how detailed the examples were while reading along. It felt like I had someone right there with me, showing me how it's done. This book covers the C# language in Unity and I will say, I felt right at home.While reading over chapter 10, you'll discover how to use textures, materials, UVs and create vertex effects. Creating those ripple effects on the water texture is one of the great tools Unity has to offer and this book covers so well.The book as a whole is very fulfilling to read, but I will say, learning about building intelligent AI for my project was most exciting. The pathfinding in Unity is pretty neat to play around with, especially with how you can change the interpolation through quaternions to have smoother transitions.If you're looking at giving Unity and chance and want a better experience learning how to, then give this book a chance, It'll be well worth it in the end!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, but I believe that it would be worth paying for it. This was an excellent exploration of the foundations of Unity development, going through all of the fundamentals as seen in Unity 2023. In particular, the explanation of how the various combinations of Colliders, Rigidbodies, and Triggers interact made me finally understand the subject, after having worked with Unity for a few years now. I also particularly like the little asides the author provides about their experiences in programming Unity. And while I have no interest in visual scripting, it was nice that the author provided both regular and visual scripting solutions to each problem.If I had a minor quibble, it's the overuse of public variables, and using inefficient functions like Invoke, as I think it's particularly important to teach beginners proper coding practices so that they start out doing it right, but I do understand that doing it like this is much more expedient.

This book is both comprehensive as it is expansive. It progressively covers all topics needed to successfully design, develop, build, and deploy games using Unity. The authors have done a stellar job in explaining the often times difficult concepts and know-how with such ease and their mastery in the Unity game engine really shows through this book. All the hands-on portions of the book (pretty much the entire book!) have been methodically thought-out, designed, and streamlined from beginning to end with impeccable flow and exceptional clarity. Most importantly, with the right level and amount of challenges, it keeps the readers engaged throughout. The authors have also taken the time to explain and/or provide additional resources for related concepts crucial to understanding game development (i.e., 3D core concepts, OOP, computer hardware etc.) to the readers where necessary, providing a strong foundation for anyone starting out in this industry.I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to teachers/instructors as well as students who are looking for the ONE Unity book they can start teaching and/or learning Unity from. This book isn't just for beginners, even if you are a seasoned Unity developer, I guarantee you will learn many new techniques. This is one book you will keep reaching back for time and again.

I'm a senior Unity engineer with 8 years experience. My take: Hands-On Unity Game Development is an great resource for beginners and intermediate Unity developers, covering a wide range of topics in detailed yet digestible language. Starting with basic concepts and working its way up step-by-step to more advanced subjects such as AI, augmented reality, and performance optimization, this book does a great job of outlining not only the fundamentals, but also the finer points of building a professional-quality video game in Unity. I'd highly recommend it not only to students and hobbyists looking to make their start in the world's most popular game engine, but also current Unity professionals looking to broaden their knowledge.
