Configuring and deploying sensors

In this section, we want data flowing from our sensors. Once we have a few sensors in place sending data, we can begin to use that to design and set up the cloud environment and think about how we want to process, store, and display the data. At this point, it is just raw data that we want to collect and visualize. Transforming that data into usable information comes in the later chapters as we think more about what the data means and how to combine it in valuable ways.

Cost and scale considerations

Several years ago, while working on a solution for the agriculture industry, our team was evaluating different wireless vendors and protocols for our solution. Sensors in the field mostly require long-range and low battery power to transmit ongoing crop, weather, and irrigation data for analysis and decision-making.
