Split screen and blue/green screen effects
We’re now going to take a look at the other ways iMovie lets you represent overlays. In the Video overlay settings drop-down menu, Split Screen is a fairly simple but still useful overlay style. In Split Screen mode, the overlay clip is placed next to the clip in the main video layer. Split-screening clips is useful when you want to imply that two things are happening at the same time, or are in a direct comparison. It’s a great way to bring together shots filmed at different times and in different places: it makes the audience feel like they’re happening right next to each other. You could even use Split Screen to show two different shots of one person; game shows sometimes do this with a shot of a contestant’s face, and their fingers on a buzzer.
