Choosing an OS for installing Snort 3
The Snort website lists a set of supported operating systems at the following link: https://www.snort.org/documents/snort-supported-oss. The list includes Alpine, CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, FreeBSD, OpenSUSE, RHEL, Slackware, and Ubuntu.
There are over 600 different Linux distros. Among these, Debian and CentOS are the most popular. For this chapter, we chose Kali, a Debian-based distro, and CentOS.
However, the approach we follow for Snort installation on these two systems generally applies to any system. Therefore, you may follow the process in general and use it on a different Linux distro (for example, Ubuntu) and expect a successful result.
