Conclusion

This chapter was an intense journey through the basics – and some of the more advanced bits – of files and the filesystem on Linux. You saw the difference between plaintext files and binary files, explored how the Linux filesystem tree is laid out, and learned all the basic commands you need to work with files. If you did it right, you also spent some time in your own Linux environment, practicing the important command-line file editing skills we showed you here.

After covering the basics, we jumped into the most critical intermediate and advanced topics that you’ll need. You saw how to find files and search them for content, and we also gave you a taste of special files and filesystems.

All of this together arms you with the most important skills and knowledge you need in order to use Linux to solve real-world problems. We hope you had fun on this whirlwind tour!
