Application workload, dictated by user characteristics, represents a major factor in cloud computing solution design. Application scalability and cost efficiency are enhanced by the solution architect's ability to leverage the automated provisioning and de-provisioning of cloud technology services. Dynamic instantiation and decommissioning of virtual machines based on workload variations is often ignored or delayed when a lift and shift application migration strategy is pursued. Failing to design or redesign solutions with application workload variability in mind can nullify any positive return on a cloud deployment investment.
