Data literacy competency framework
Many of the definitions of data literacy, even our own, include the word ability, but data literacy is not just an ability that individuals have. It is more than that. It includes skills and mindsets as well. Abilities refer to being able to do something, whereas a skill refers to the effective use of an individual’s knowledge and abilities that can be measured. These words often are used interchangeably but the key aspect as it relates to this definition is that skills can not only be measured but can also be gained through training or experience. Data literacy also requires individuals to not just have various skills but also a mindset for approaching data. Mindsets relate to our views and beliefs on certain topics and our willingness to apply them. For example, someone may have the skills to analyze data, but if they don’t have the mindset to be open to getting diverse perspectives, then it’s a moot point.
