Hands-On Cloud Solutions with Azure

Moving Existing Apps to Azure

Now that we have our Azure environment, in this chapter, we will cover what to do next with our existing apps. Should I lift and shift, or migrate? How do I build out resources, move existing code, and make cost considerations?  Whether you are looking to move your SaaS, IaaS, or PaaS-based solution, you might be able to migrate them to Azure with minimal-to-no code changes, except for application configuration. During this process, we will discuss how to use hybrid models for those legacy applications that aren't good candidates for Azure for third-party or regulatory reasons.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Moving apps to Azure
  • Building Azure resources
  • Deploying existing code to Azure
  • How to cost manage your decisions

Technical requirements

The requirements for this chapter are as follows:

How I approach the discussion

When I begin a discussion on migration to Azure with an organization, it is a bit different than a greenfield discussion because we have something in our hands. We know the size, shape, and history of the application we are moving. Let’s look at things we should do in this scenario.

We want to start by assessing the applications and infrastructure, and we do this in the following way:

  • Discovery, which allows us to peek under the hood of the applications and infrastructure needed to support them. This is not only the code but such things as DNS and services needed to support the application. This is helpful, as not every application is a good candidate to migrate or you may need to secure VPN connect to the internal resources that can’t be moved to Azure.
  • This will lead to mapping your applications to discover all dependencies, which...

Migrating to Azure

Now that we have configured our tenant, let's look at some ways to migrate enterprise systems, VMs, or applications to Azure. While this book is hands-on with solutions in the cloud, I thought I would take a brief moment to talk about SaaS solutions as they may become an important part of providing well-rounded solutions in Azure.

Let's talk SaaS migrations

When an organization looks to move to Azure, it's usually not just legacy applications or new greenfield development, but actually, some Enterprise packaged solutions like Exchange, SharePoint, or Dynamics.  As we discussed in Chapter 1, Getting Started with Azure, this all starts with Azure Active Directory.  With the complications...

Summary

In this chapter, we have taken a look at what we do with migrating existing legacy applications after we have configured Azure. We also looked at the ARM template and how we deploy resources, as well as at shared resources between on-premise and Azure. We discussed using Azure Connect to sync on-premise AD to Azure AD to help with the hybrid model. We also looked at the difference between the IaaS virtual machine and PaaS instance, or container moves to Azure.

Now that we have looked at how to migrate legacy applications to Azure either with lift and shift or instance base, it is time to discuss how we architect solutions within Azure.

Questions

Let's take a look at what we have learned in this chapter:

  1. What does it mean to lift and shift?
  2. What is an Azure AD Connect?
  3. What does ARM stand for?
  4. Can templates be used for multiple environments?
  5. What is another name for the App Service Plan?
  6. What are DTUs?
  7. What is IaaS?
  8. What is PaaS?

This book is in need of a serious editor review. I find the number of unclear, mangled sentences astounding. For example, from chapter 5:"If is important to understand the FTP services in Azure have been more to more secure files management system and protocol to get these files in Azure and share them."This kind of careless writing hampers the book's readability and puts the reader in the position to read and re-read to figure out what the author MIGHT have meant. The screenshots in the book are not crisp, blurry in some cases, which I've found requires a magnifying glass to understand.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
